Achieving Permanent Antistatic Performance at Ultra-Low Loadings with SWCNTs

In industries ranging from electronics packaging to medical manufacturing and cleanroom environments, controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD) is critical. However, formulators have long been forced to compromise performance for stability. Traditional antistatic agents offer a temporary fix, but they come with inherent limitations.

At Carbon Search New Materials, we are shifting the paradigm with advanced single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) technology.

The Flaw in Traditional Antistatic Mechanisms

Conventional antistatic agents primarily rely on surfactants that migrate to the surface of the polymer to absorb ambient moisture. This mechanism is fundamentally flawed:

  • Humidity-Dependent: In dry environments, performance drops significantly.
  • Bleeding Out: The migratory agents wear off over time, causing surface contamination (outgassing).
  • Performance Degradation: Protection is temporary and diminishes with cleaning or aging.

The SWCNT Advantage: A Permanent 3D Conductive Network

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) offer a structural solution rather than a chemical one. Due to an extremely high aspect ratio (>10,000), SWCNTs form a permanent, microscopic 3D conductive network within the polymer matrix at a dramatically lower percolation threshold.

Here are the core technical advantages our materials deliver:

  • Ultra-low Loading: Achieve stable surface resistivity (10⁶ - 10⁹ Ω/sq) with only 0.01 - 0.1 wt% addition, minimizing impact on the base material.
  • Permanent & Humidity-independent: Because the network is physically locked into the matrix, performance remains unaffected by environmental conditions or time.
  • Matrix Integrity: Unlike Carbon Black, SWCNTs preserve the host material’s original color, transparency, and mechanical strength.
  • Zero Migration: There is no outgassing or surface contamination, making SWCNTs highly suitable for demanding environments like cleanrooms, electronics packaging, and medical applications.

Tailored Dispersions for Your Specific Substrate

Raw nanomaterials are only as good as their dispersion. At Carbon Search, we go beyond providing raw materials; we engineer comprehensive, tailored SWCNT dispersion solutions ready for a wide range of substrates:

  • Engineering Plastics: Compatible with PC, PA, and ABS systems.
  • Rubber & Elastomers: Ideal for seals and hoses requiring durable antistatic properties.
  • Coatings & Adhesives: Formulated for Epoxy and PU systems.

Let’s Accelerate Your R&D

Whether you need an ultra-low loading additive for your compounding line or a pre-dispersed slurry for your coating formulation, our technical team is ready to support your A/B testing.
